creating a research plan

Our company started a new project to help frequent travelers, as well as people visiting a new destination for the first time, plan their trips and keep hotel, flight, transportation, and ticket information easy to access. My role was to support the research strategy by identifying insights and opportunities for solutions.

deliver a solution based on:

**add the number of days for each stage

  • Identify their main pain points;

  • Provide solutions that reduce these problems;

  • Help the company understand how current and potential customers interact with the proposed solution and support the continuous improvement of the experience.

exploratory research #1

To better understand the topic, we planned to conduct:

  • Secondary research (desk research) to gather existing information about travel, document security, and related topics;

  • A competitor analysis (benchmarking) to understand how similar companies in the travel industry approach this problem;

  • Qualitative in-depth interviews with people who travel for leisure or work.

analysis and synthesis

After this phase, we planned to:

  • Hold short debriefing sessions after each interview or data collection session to discuss the findings;

  • Document the research findings;

  • Transcribe the interviews and identify common patterns;

  • Create an affinity map to analyze the research insights;

  • Deliver a research report;

defining the research methodology

Build a research plan and its supporting materials, including the interview guide, based on the hypotheses defined earlier.

Proposed methodology:

  • Send surveys to identify people who match the research profile and uncover shared habits.

  • Conduct in-depth interviews with participants selected through the surveys who match the target profile;

Sample questions:

  • How do you organize and plan a trip?

  • Tell me about your most recent trip.

  • What was your experience with the passport or visa process?

  • What do you usually pack for a trip?

  • How do you organize your documents while traveling?

deliverables at the end of the research process

The discovery process is always ongoing, but these were the main deliverables planned for this initial phase:

  • Create journey maps for the different user profiles;

  • Develop personas representing the profiles identified during the research;

  • Deliver a complete report to stakeholders and team members with all research findings and results;

This project focused on developing a research plan to understand how people visiting a new destination for the first time plan their trips and keep hotel, flight, transportation, and ticket information easy to access.

Research planning is an essential part of any UX design project, so the methodology and supporting research materials need to be selected carefully.
